Yes it looks like we are moving towards a video. So there's another short section of comic next and then...

This is going to be hot. Like very hot. Even I'm surprised. Hottest movie on DA ever by a long way..

@CG Mann: :)
Hi. Yeah it's going well. I may go to the 15th, carry on animating this week, then render and edit next week. I just hope we can get it all in.

Ok, I'm gonna extend this just a little more. There's a lot of final rendering, and some of it is very slow. So I'm gonna take this to 20th, so overall I've just moved it a week.
The good news is though, I think this will be the longest DA movie ever at around 2 minutes as well as the hottest.

Ok, we are almost done, but the rendering is painfully slow.
When they introduced these new shaders a couple of years back I took advantage of them and constructed all the characters' skin again with the new system but they are horrendously slow in close up, and a lot of this is close up. The difference between using them and not using them is enormous.
Don't know if CGMann has any ideas but rendering flat out I can't speed this up anymore than I can at this time, it's already taking advantage of every speed up/short cut I know and it's gonna take a few more days yet, so looking at around 23-25th I'd guess.

There are always options.. Difficult to make suggestions blind.. But you could try rendering you SSS as a separate pass and them composite them together after the fact. Then you can use lower AA quality for the SS pass.

Oh.. and Don't use the "Simple Skin" node.. It's easy to set up and looks great.. But it's overkill and takes forever. Simple Skin uses 2 layers of SSS. If you make your own custom shader node you can get similar-ish results with using only one layer of SSS.

Another reason the SimpleSkin node takes a long time is it's blurry reflections. Another thing you can do to speed up rendering is to make an environment map of your... environment.. Then use that as a reflection image on the skin surface instead of true reflections. It's not as accurate but if you get it right it can look just about as good... And it renders much faster.

I am working on a project here using a model of a car. After I added the custom chrome wheels the rendering slowed to a crawl. This was due to the ray recursion limit was set to the default 16... Which means it was tracing bounce after bounce to 16 bounces.. And inside a cavernous area like a wheel there is plenty to bounce around.
So if you are going to stick with true reflections, consider lowering the recursion limit so the left thigh is not reflecting the reflection of the left thigh in the reflection of the right thigh's reflection of the reflection of the right thigh's reflection of the left thigh, which is a reflection of the right thigh.
And also try lowering the number of samples in the reflection node.

Thanks for the detailed info CGMann. Yeah absolutely, it's too slow, so I never used the Simple Skin thing, it was all wrong for what we do here.
Often I do lower the Ray limit, what I found is under 4 it might be... it stops drawing reflections in way you would expect or something...I can't remember exactly what, but there's a funny lower limit that was >2.
Thanks again for the input
